Upson, WI – Iron County Outdoor Recreation Enthusiasts (ICORE) is working with the Iron County Forestry Department to improve access to Corrigan’s Lookout, a popular scenic destination for residents and visitors to Iron County. Visitors to the site make a half mile walk from the parking lot to an awesome view of Upson lake, the Penokee hills, the vast hardwood forest below, and Lake Superior in the distance.

ICORE and Hurley High School’s Field Biology class have planned a workday on September 25 at 9:00 a.m to 3:00 p.m. to improve access to Corrigan’s Lookout. The present trail has some wet areas, and Hurley High School students and ICORE volunteers will work to improve the trail for visitors to enjoy. A second date may be scheduled if more work is required.

Volunteers should meet at 9:00 a.m. at the Corrigan’s Lookout parking lot off of Highway 122 approximately 2 miles north of Upson. Bring work gloves, work or hiking boots, work clothes appropriate for the weather, lunch, plenty of water to drink, and trail tools (saws, shovels, pruning shears, rock bars, Pulaskis, etc.) if you have them. Volunteers will be working with hand tools and assisting teacher Diane O’Krongly with supervising 11th and 12th grade students. Students and volunteers will gain an understanding of natural resource management and build outdoor skills such as trail development, map and compass orienteering, and plant and animal identification.

Iron County Outdoor Recreation Enthusiasts (ICORE) is a group of silent sports enthusiasts promoting the responsible use of land and water open to the public for the enjoyment of all.
