“History of the Hurley Area 1880 – 1920,  The Frontier Years”

Hurley, Wisconsin originated out of the late 19th Century rush for iron ore and timber on the Gogebic Range.  Hurley was the first town to emerge on the Range, and served as its initial economic and social center.  Although Hurley soon became eclipsed in population by Ironwood, Michigan, its twin city across the Montreal River, Hurley achieved fame and infamy because of its many saloons and bordellos, which were patronized by thousands of miners and lumberjacks.

Join us to learn about Hurley’s colorful past, patterns of immigration to Hurley from the established mining ranges in the district, as well as from Canada, and directly from Europe, and see photos of pioneer residents and famous guests of the celebrated Burton Hotel in Hurley.

Funding for this project provided by the Gogebic Range Health
