April is National Poetry Month and Fe University is celebrating by offering a poetry workshop. If you have ever written a poem and wondered if it is any good, if you like to play with words or if you have life experiences you would like to put on paper, take this opportunity to expand your creativity and skills by attending Fe University’s Poetry Workshop: Playing with Words which will be held on Saturday April 6, from 9:30-1:30 at the Mercer Library.

Everyone’s personal history and aspirations are unique and make an excellent starting point for poems. The purpose of the course is to increase participants’ comfort in transforming images into poetry and the only requirement is a desire to free up your creative side. This workshop will combine a discussion of the various poetic styles, terms and techniques followed by timed writing exercises that will help develop specific skills and loosen up the creative process. There will be handouts on editing, revision, and critiquing, plus a resource lists of books and internet sites.  Prompts will be available to help with exercises at home. Please bring pen and paper or computer for the writing exercises. Also bring a bag lunch/snack as we will take a break midway through the course.

Instructor Joan Marie Giusto says that writing poetry is like dancing with words. Her poetry has been published in the United States and Ireland.  She is a current member of the Wisconsin Fellowship of Poets. Her poem “River Runes,” was included in the “Trace Art and Poetry Collaboration” produced by the Center for Visual Arts of Wausau.  Other works have appeared in several newsletters and journals including Haiku Journal, Ariel Anthology, Bards for Hunger 2018 Anthology, and several issues of the WFOP calendar and Muse letter.

The Academy of American Poets says that we are having a poetry boom due to the ability to read and share poems online. Join us at the Poetry Workshop on April 9th and become a part of the boom.

Cost of the class is $25 ($5 discount if registration and payment is received before March 23). Scholarships are available. Register early as class size is limited to 10.
