Four-Part Series on Landscaping with Native Plants in Iron County, Wisconsin

Iron County, WI – Darrin Kimbler, UW-Madison Extension Iron County Agriculture Educator is presenting a four-part series on landscaping with native plants every Friday from March 31 to April 21.

The series is a partnership between UW-Madison Extension Iron County and the Hurley and Mercer libraries. These presentations will provide valuable information and practical tips on how to create stunning and sustainable landscapes using native plant species that are well suited to the region.

  • Introduction to Landscaping with Native Plants – March 31 at 10AM at the Mercer Library
  • Landscaping in Shaded Environments – April 7 at 10AM at the Hurley Library
  • Landscaping in Dry Environments – April 14 at 10AM at the Mercer Library
  • Landscaping in Wet Environments – April 21 at 10AM at the Hurley Library

Each presentation is in-person and virtual to accommodate participants needs. The presentations will be recorded and made available on the UW-Madison Extension Iron County website and social media channels for those who are unable to attend live.

Each 30-minute presentation will include time for questions and answers, allowing attendees to get personalized advice from Darrin. Attendees will leave each session with a deeper understanding of the benefits of using native plants in their gardens and the knowledge and confidence to create their own stunning and sustainable landscapes.

Part 3: Landscaping in Dry Environments

April 14, 2023 – 10:00 am at the Mercer Library

This presentation will explore the challenges and opportunities of gardening in dry conditions, such as those found in sandy or rocky soils. Attendees will learn about native plant species that have adapted to low-water environments, such as prairie grasses, wildflowers, and shrubs. The presentation will also cover topics such as irrigation techniques, mulching, and selecting plants that are well-suited to specific soil and light conditions.
