About the Art Form:
Ukrainian egg decorating, called pysanky (plural: pysanky), uses a wax-resist method to create intricate designs. Here’s how it works:

  • Egg Preparation: Raw or emptied eggs are cleaned, and sometimes boiled.
  • Wax-Resist Method: A tool called a kistka applies hot beeswax to the egg in specific patterns. The egg is then dyed in stages, with wax protecting certain areas to create multicolored designs.
  • Layering Colors: Wax is applied and dyed repeatedly to achieve rich, detailed patterns.
  • Finishing Touches: Once dyeing is complete, the wax is melted away to reveal the vibrant design beneath.

Patterns & Symbolism:

  • Geometric designs: harmony, continuity, nature
  • Plants & flowers: growth, renewal
Colors: red = energy, black = depth, green = spring, yellow = joy

This ancient folk art tradition offers a unique way to explore creativity, color, and pattern—perfect for anyone who loves hands-on artistic experiences

Artist Bio – Nancy Pierce
Nancy Pierce is a multidisciplinary artist and instructor whose creative passions span photography, folk art, and the centuries-old tradition of Ukrainian egg dyeing. She recently guided a wonderful group of students into this intricate folk art, which dates back several centuries and celebrates the arrival of spring and the Easter season. Using delicately hand-drawn, nature-inspired geometric designs, Nancy teaches the meditative, multi-layered wax-and-dye process that transforms simple eggs into enduring works of art—non-edible keepsakes that can be treasured for generations.

Nancy’s artistic journey began in childhood when her grandparents gifted her a camera. She was captivated by the magic of seeing the world through a lens—how the camera revealed perspectives different from the everyday. As she grew, so did her love of photography, evolving into an exploration of color, light, shadow, and the interplay of visual textures. Whether capturing the extraordinary within the ordinary or creating abstract impressions, her images reflect a deep curiosity about the world.

In both her photography and folk art, Nancy strives to help others see familiar things in new ways. Her work embraces vivid color, tactile and visual texture, and the quiet, reflective moments discovered through handmade craft.
