Mercer/Manitowish Waters Area VFW Post 9536 Memorial Day Speaker will be Post Commander Alan Schmitz. Schmitz has been a post member for 41 years after serving honorably in the US Navy Air Attack (AD Skyraider) Squadron during the Viet Nam War. After returning to civilian life, Alan started and operated his own Excavation business. In the winter months Schmitz worked as a EMT/Paramedic for City County Ambulance in Rhinelander for 11 years and a Police Officer and Fire Chief in his former home town of Lac du Flambeau. Alan has been an active member of the US Coast Guard Aux. as a pilot in air operations and communications specialist; retiring after 22 years. Pilot, Communications specialist, Amateur Radio operator, member of Camp American legion Post 1925 and presently a Captain in the Wis. Wing Civil Air Patrol. Captain Schmitz considers it a special privilege to have the opportunity to participate in honoring our departed Veterans.
Mercer’s program will begin at 10 am. at the cemetery on Beachway Drive in Mercer (and if rained out, at the Mercer School.) and at 11:30 am. at the Manitowish Waters Cemetery. (if rained out, at the Manitowish Waters town hall)
