Students will learn the basics of American Sign Language, beginning with the manual alphabet.  Students will also increase sign language vocabulary along with knowledge of grammatical structure.  Students will be able to hold basic conversations with deaf individuals.

Course structure:  The course will be given in _6__ sessions, each __90_ minutes long, covering the following topics:

In-class activities will reinforce vocabulary and fluency of the language. There will also be some discussion of deaf culture and how deaf individuals are integrated into the hearing culture. Through class activities, discussions and videos, a deeper understanding of sign language and deaf people will be achieved.

Requirements: Students must come eager to learn and have the motivation and ability to concentrate to learn a new language. Copies of a sign language text will be used and available to students.

Instructor: The instructor is a retired teacher of deaf and hearing students for 36 years.  She has a bachelor’s degree in Deaf Education, along with additional courses in ASL for interpreters.  In addition, she has 40 years experience interpreting for deaf adults in various settings.
