Bates to lead snowshoe hike to old-growth pines

Naturalist John Bates will lead a free snowshoe hike into remnant old-growth pines near the DuPage State Natural Area on Friday, January 11. This will be a half-mile hike on well-packed trail. Those interested should meet at the Mercer Public Library at 1:00 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Iron County Outdoor Recreation Enthusiasts (ICORE). Visit for more information.

The event is open to the public, and is sponsored by the Iron County Outdoor Recreation Enthusiasts (ICORE).

This small site retains some of the largest remnant white pines left in Iron County and perhaps the entire state. The hike will be about a half mile on a packed trail and will be suitable for all skill levels. Those interested in hiking with the group can meet at the Mercer Public Library, 2548W Margaret Street, at 1:00 p.m. to carpool to the site just off County Road J.

ICORE’s mission is to promote and support silent sports activities and infrastructure in Iron County, and the group sponsors activities, trail work days, lectures, and other events throughout the county year-round. Visit for more information about ICORE and other upcoming events.
