Turtle River Pursuit Ski Race
The Turtle River Pursuit skiing competition is a two day race, combining classic (diagonal stride) and skating (freestyle) techniques . The classic race will be at the MECCA Trails in Mercer on Saturday, February 9, and the skate ski race is at the WinMan Trails in Manitowish Waters on Sunday, February 10. The Pursuit will include individual skiers who ski both disciplines and two person teams. Saturday results determine the Sunday start times. The fastest skier on Saturday is the first out of the starting gate on Sunday. The first skier across the finish line on Sunday wins the two day race.
MECCA and WinMan Ski Trails are among the best cross country trails in the upper Midwest. The trail systems enjoy the combination of skiing through the rolling terrain through northern pine and hardwood forests and great natural snowfall.
The Gogebic Range Health Foundation is collaborating with the Turtle River Pursuit, providing its expertise in community engagement and fundraising. The Pursuit plans a year round community outreach bringing kids, families and seniors out to the trail systems for exercise, fresh air, instruction focused on good nutrition and healthy lifestyles.
Sponsorship from the business community includes financial, in kind contributions and volunteer support.
