Mercer Public School
The V.F.W Post 9536 invites all residents of the Mercer/Manitowish Waters area to the Mercer School on November 11th, 2022 for their Veterans Day Celebration!
Start your day off with coffee time at 8:30 A.M. and a student sponsored breakfast! After that move into the gym for the ceremony that will start at 10:00 A.M.
The Ceremony will start with the Legion/VFW presenting the colors which will be followed by the keynote speaker, Vice Commander Alan Schmitz.
Schmitz has been a post member for 41 years after serving honorably in the US Navy Air Attack (AD Skyraider) Squadron during the Vietnam war. After returning to civilian life, Schmitz enrolled in Wisconsin State University Stevens Point majoring in Elementary Education. Summer months Al started and operated his own excavating business. In the winter months after school Schmitz worked as an EMT/Paramedic for City County Ambulance in Rhinelander for 11 years and also as Police Officer and Fire Chief in his former home town of Lac du Flambeau. Al has been an active member of the US Coastguard Aux. as a pilot in air operations and communication specialist: retiring after 22 years. Presently Al is an Amateur Radio operator, member of Camp American Legion post 1925, pilot and for the last 25 years a Captain in the Wis. Wing Civil Air Patrol.
After this will ne the presentation to the participating students in the Voice of Democracy and Patriotic Pen awards. The winning student in each category will recite their composition.
