Winterfest at MECCA Trails
Mercer’s MECCA Trails to host Winterfest on January 17
Mercer, WI — The MECCA Trails are in excellent shape for the upcoming Winterfest live and virtual race events. Live races are scheduled for Saturday, January 17, and virtual events are available now through mid-February.
Winterfest has become known as the “best-run small race” in the region, according to organizers. Race director Rodney Silvis is optimistic about conditions for this year’s event. “Thanks to early-season snow and the dedication of our groomers, MECCA trails are enjoying excellent conditions,” Silvis said. “We expect to have a great race day experience for skiers.”
Participants at the live event on January 17 can choose to compete in 15k or 30k classic or skate races or the “Claire d’Loon 5k,” which allows participants to choose their technique. Those interested in a true test of skills can try the new Skiathlon, a 10k classic plus 10k skate challenge.
The organizers of Winterfest strive to create a welcoming yet challenging race day. Skiers enjoy gliding through glacial features and towering forests with stunning views of the Turtle Flambeau Flowage. A European interval start means no jockeying for position or broken poles, and numerous water and food stops help athletes produce their best results. Back at the chalet, participants feast on complimentary pasties, hot chocolate, and other treats. Racers and guests will enjoy the festive atmosphere of cow bells, bonfires, and an old-fashioned Northwoods winter event.
As in previous years, MECCA Trails is also offering a series of virtual Winterfest events, which allow skiers to ski the courses on their own schedule and turn in their best time. Virtual Winterfest opened in early December and will continue through February 14, 2026. Participants have the option of completing the 30k, 15k, or 5k races or the Skiathlon, which can be completed by an individual or a team in the virtual option. The Mercer Springs Snowshoe Tour allows participants to snowshoe at their own pace or keep a time to be eligible for prizes.
Registration for Winterfest Live and Virtual events is now open at meccatrails.com. Students 19 and under can register for just $20 thanks to support from the event sponsors.
MECCA actively collaborates with the Town of Mercer, Iron County Parks and Forestry Department, and Wisconsin DNR to maintain the 21k trail system. Winterfest is presented by the MECCA Ski Club in collaboration with the Gogebic Range Health System.
